The US Highway

No, it's not a metaphor. I'm going to talk about the literal US Highway.

In the US, nobody walks. Well, almost nobody. Most people drive, because you can't really get to anywhere on foot, since everything is so far away (unless you live in the city, that is). When you drive, you are definitely bound to experience the US Highway. Driving at 80 miles per hour (or 130 km/h) is not something you'll used to here in Singapore. The thing is, even if you're afraid to step on the gas pedal, there is in fact a minimum speed that you will have to drive at. I asked my Dad, and he said it's because another car will probably crash into you if you don't drive fast enough. That makes sense, actually.

When you're driving at 80 mph on a stretch of highway, heading straight towards the vanishing point with no other vehicles in sight, you get a thrill. Definitely. You wouldn't know the speed you're actually driving at until you look down at your dashboard or GPS and realise, with a slight gasp, that you had been actually passing the tumbleweeds and cacti at the sides at a insane speed. When nothing but the desert greets you, you can't help but worry, what if I die here? How do I even call for help when there's no cellular signal and no sign of civilisation? The only thing to do, is to pray, and continue to step on the gas pedal so that you'll get out of this deserted plains and reach your destination earlier.
