Eat at NTU

There are three kinds of canteens/restaurants in our campus: canteens located in different halls, canteens located in north/south spine and restaurants/cafes
Most canteens have Mix Veg Rice, western cuisine, Korean/Japanese cuisine, Chicken Rice and Indian cuisine. The "special food" in each canteens will be listed later.

Cateens located in different halls
-Canteen 1

(Chinese Cuisine)

Can 1 is known for their Mala, as well as their Western food, Dams (which may be a little pricey, but it's worth a try). In the past, the smoothies used to be a hot favourite, but since its closure, there is only one drinks stall left in the canteen.
Although Can 1 is one of the more frequented canteens, it closes at about 8.30pm on weekdays. Do note the timings in case there's no more food left!

-Canteen 2
The Yong Tau Foo at Canteen 2 is actually Malatang, and is called PangPang Malatang. The soup is Pork Bone soup, you can ask for more Sesame to make it more tasty.
You can also find Takoyaki and waffles at western cuisine. I have tried waffles with butter, ice cream and chocolate banana, they are all very nice.
Can 2 is one of the biggest canteens in school and closes well after 9pm, which makes it a popular option amongst hall residents and non-residents alike. Although known for its Ayam Penyet, the Korean stall, which is not unlike Can 17's, often has long queues as well. As the Korean stall is run by a Chinese couple, you can effectively communicate your special orders to them.
In addition, Can 2 also has a Black & White room, which allows access to recreational games such as darts. Diners can have the choice of heading down to the room for a game or two after a meal. Some also choose to drop by the Giant outlet or 7-11 nearby to grab a drink for their meal.

-Canteen 4
A small canteen, however, I am not sure if it is still open since hall 4 is under construction right now. It was said that Dams was originally from Can 4. The only place for Bingsoo in NTU was at Can 4, but that has not been the case since it has shut down. Sidenote: Can 4's Chinese stall which sells dumplings was said to offer students extra dumplings on occasions.

-Canteen 9
I used to eat the hotpot at canteen 9 every two days when I was staying in Hall 8. It is a good place if you want to have dinner/lunch with several friends, you can order and enjoy the hotpot together and you will feel that the hotpot tastes much more delicious when it is served in small basins instead of plates or bowls. Can 9 also has waffles with ice-cream, which makes for a good dessert. Legend has it that their mala is not bad as well.

-Canteen 11
Can 11's latest addition is a Japanese stall at the corner. Probably due to novelty, waiting times is agonisingly long, with some students complaining that they had to suffer their stomachs growling for a full 30 minutes. Sources have said that they would rather have had the caifan instead. As for the Japanese stall, the ramen's broth is not as thick, and the charsiew is slightly overcooked. My favourite element of the ramen, the egg, was overcooked, and had a mustard yellow tinge to it rather than its usual shade of orange. However, the ramen itself was acceptable. Waffles with ice-cream and other snacks such as sesame balls are also available here.

-Canteen 13
The mix veg rice at canteen 13 is quite special, it is more like Sichuan cuisine and most of the dishes there are spicy. They won't prepare a large amount of food, so you need to be there early enough to try their most popular dishes.
The noodles located in the corner is worth trying as well, especially the beef noodles.
At the other corner is the famous Can 13 ramen. Can 13 ramen is the most glorious version of ramen you can get in NTU, and you cannot give it a miss. I don't even have to write much here, because when you give it a taste, you will understand that no words are necessary.

-Canteen 14

    Located in hall 14.
Last I heard, Dams has opened a stall in Can 14 as well. Can 14's zichar stall offers plenty of choices, including cereal prawns, an uncommon option.

-Canteen 16
Black Tonkotsu Udon ($5) Interesting lunch option to consider while you're nearby school.
You can buy Ramen and other Japanese cuisine and Hotpot from canteen 16.
The hotpot at canteen 16 is the best one in the campus, in my opinion. You can also ask them not to add any chili if you are not used to spicy food.
Food-quality wise, Can 16 has been said to be not very impressive.
Can 16 is a little special in their payment systems. Instead of the traditional over-the-counter payment, payment is made at a kiosk.

-Canteen 17/18
(Taiwanese Cuisine)
 (Fried YTF)
Located in pioneer/crescent hall. You can find variety of food there. For example, Taiwanese cuisine, Thai cuisine etc. I really love the YTF at canteen 17/18, they have 2 versions of YTF: serving with soup or fried YTF. The YTF and Thai cuisine was located the Quad Cafe@SBS before.
In addition to the Yong Tau Foo and Thai cuisine, it was said that the Korean stall was also located at the Quad Cafe in the past.
The Korean stall is mainly run by 2 Korean ladies who man the counter. As they are Korean, it will be difficult for them to take special orders, so don't try to use "Auntie bu yao la!" (Auntie, no spicy food please) on them, although they do understand "dapao" (please just use "takeaway" for their sake). Popular choices are their beef, spicy chicken, mackerel sets and their ginseng chicken soup, all of which have generous portions. The ginseng chicken soup is known to run out especially quickly on cold, rainy days, when students hurry for something hot to comfort their souls and warm their stomachs.
Can 17 is known to open until a late time, up to even 10pm at night. If you order from the Korean stall at the right time, just before they close, you can get lucky enough to get extra eggs on your beef sets as they clear out their ingredients.
However, they close at 3pm on Saturdays.
Can 17 also had a new Western stall at the start of 2017, which has been said to have overpriced food given the portion and quality.

-Northhill Food Court
As mentioned in a previous post, Northhill Food Court is one of the largest canteens among all the canteens in the campus. The Laksa, claypot chicken rice, minced pork rice and different kinds of porridge is my favourite.
Although the caifan is said to be acceptable, the food is often served cold or lukewarm as they have been left in the open. When ordering with the stall that sells dough fritters, do drag a Chinese-speaking friend along if you can't speak Mandarin, as it has been witnessed that the cashiers required translations from the customers for their own menu (even calling the number on the menu doesn't work, I've tried). The stall selling fish soup is interesting as they do offer a herbal soup option, something you don't see everyday. With regards to the drinks stall, the eggs in their breakfast sets are notably raw and the water in the mug they pass you is not boiling but only warm. So if they say leave the eggs for 5 minutes, I would say 7 minutes would be a better bet.
One plus point about the North Hill canteen is that the stalls accept payment by NETS, but some stalls' devices are down, so be sure to check with the cashier before placing your orders.
North Hill canteen closes at 9pm, but stalls start running out of food at about 8.30pm.

Paik's Bibimbap
Peach Garden Chinese Restaurant
Pen & Inc (Bar, located at the same level as McDonald's)
The sandwich guys

South Spine:
Koufu/Canteen B
Other than its chicken fuyong, the salad, and the eggs in the breakfast set, the whole foodcourt has been complained for its overall quality of food. Best to avoid at all costs, unless you always have lessons nearby (mainly the poor NBS/SPMS/HSS students) or stay in the holiday resort better known as Hall 7. Koufu also closes way early, sometimes around 7pm.
llaollao
Even a prof has commented on the staff's low efficiency at times, but overall, a great dessert to have.
Hot & Roll
Co-op@NTU cafe (located at the Hive, B5)
Known for strict operating hours, insanely long queues and great pastas. Overall fantastic song choices (covers of pop songs), and has a history of giving an apple a day every Wednesday to promote balanced diets. Carbonara is known to be jelak.

Editor's Note:
NTU's food scene is constantly changing and it is difficult for us to keep track personally. This post is not guaranteed to be 100% accurate. Leave a comment below this post or go down to our Feedback page to keep us updated on the food on campus!
