xoxo, Gossip Girl

Everyone loves gossip. High school dramas, scandalous affairs of the rich and famous - new headlines splashed across the latest tabloids almost everyday. The Gossip Girl show rose to popularity when it went on for 6 seasons, starting from 2007 and ending in 2012. The show chronicles Manhattan's well-known socialites as they graduate high school and step into the working world. Not dislike cult favourite Mean Girls, stereotypes are prominent, as evidenced by the titles given to various characters ('It-Girl', 'Queen B', 'Golden Boy', etc).

Frankly speaking, I do enjoy the show. It's a good way to pass time and the dialogues are amusing at times. Although there may be some exaggeration in how everyone sleeps with almost everyone (the best friend and the boyfriend? Really?), there can't possibly be smoke without fire. As you watch the developments of the show, you get reminded of the cultural differences between the East and the West. In the wild West, Friday nights are almost exclusively reserved for parties, while in the East, we either snuggle at home and have a quiet dinner with our parents, or study hard for next week's lessons. Of course, we should compare the life of the Asian upper class with that depicted in Gossip Girl instead. Although we are Asian, many of our parents have the view that Western education would benefit their children better and many of those who have the financial ability to do so proceed to send their children overseas at a young age. This leads to Westernisation of the Asian children, and it is not entirely impossible for them to behave like another Serena Van Der Woodsen or Nate Archibald.

Gossip Girl is amazing for its incredulity but overall, it's a great way to pass time.
